East Midlands Regional Go Ride coach, Dean
Hughes is bringing his Watt bikes over to Melton to give us a go at Watt bike
racing. The machines are like exercise bikes you find in a gym, but better. They
are linked to a screen and you can see how you are getting on against your
rivals as the race progresses.
DEVELOPING ATHLETES WORKSHOP

East Midlands Talent coach, Rob Sharmen, is coming to deliver this workshop. A must for would be riders and great for parents to get an insight into what Cycle racing and the training required is like.
GO RIDE RACING
Arriving early, the Melton Meteors coaching team set up the course for the Meteors Mountain bike Go Race event on Sunday morning. The races were being held at Melton Mowbray’s Country Park.
Following registration, the riders were given some time to familiarize
themselves with the circuit, before riding a 1 lap time trial. U10 rider Millie
Reid was encouraged round the course by one of the coaches running ahead of her.
Joseph Collins of Bourne Whs won the U12’s time trial with Ella
Rimmington only a few seconds behind. It was really tight in the U14 race with
only 1 second separating Joe Thorn and Dan Farnsworth. The U16’s race was a
family affair with brothers Tom and Jack Winterton, Tom taking the race by 4
seconds.
After a short break for a drink and rest the whole group lined up for a 7-lap race. Joe Thorn lead them out of the starting loop and onto the course proper, he continued to drive hard at the front leading into lap 2, with the Winterton brothers closing behind. Dan Farnsworth had made a slow start but was now starting to close on the leaders. Into lap 4 and all had changed at the head of the race with Farnsworth now at the front, followed by the Wintertons and a battling Thorn. At the bell Farnsworth had a 20 second lead on Tom Winterton with Jack a further 10 seconds back. Further back, Ella Rimmington and Jamie Benskin were having a real battle and Joseph Collins had to pull out mid race, suffering on the grass climb that dominated the course.
Farnsworth took the chequered flag a lap later with a strong finishing T Winterton closing the gap to 10 seconds with his brother a further 30 seconds back and the courageous Thorn holding on to 4th. Benskin won the battle behind for 5th, with Rimmington finishing 6th.
U10, Millie Reid rode just 1 lap of the circuit to great applause from the parents.
As the organizer I would like to thank the guys who came and raced, also all the helpers on the day and Melton Borough Council for allowing us to use this wonderful venue.
Thursday Night coaching sessions have now ended due to the Nights drawing in
09/06/11
Tonight saw a record turnout for the 5th Melton Meteors cycling skills session.
Riders skills were tested on a twisting turning circuit laid out by the coaches, the riders cornering skills were really put to the test. The group road at a steady pace and one at a time the guys accelerated off the front, carrying on their effort until they caught the rear of the bunch.
Following 20 minutes the pace was slowed right down and the guys had a slow bicycle race, where their balancing were tested.
The session finished tonight with an Elimination race (also know as 'the devil take the hindmost') where the last rider crossing the line each lap was pulled out, the race finished with the battle of the brothers, Alex Thorn beating his younger Brother Joe in the final sprint to the line.
Thanks Guys for a great night........
2010/ 2011 Cyclo- cross season review
Melton Meteors regulars, Alex Thorn, Josh Snodin, Cameron Reid, Eve Lyon
and Kerrigan Robb all raced throughout the winter competing in Cyclo cross races
throughout Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire.
Alex and Josh competed in the Youth races for Under 16’s and within these races there was a separate Under 14’s race. Both riders had consistent results throughout the winter, Alex winning the Melton Olympic Cyclo cross trophy for his efforts.
They represented the club at the Regional championships, the Oakham round
of the National trophy series, putting in solid performances and Josh raced at
the British National championship where he finished 32nd.
Cameron Reid and Eve Lyon also raced the Notts and Derby league events
for Under 12’s, where again they showed great consistency. Next season will be
a real test for these guys as they move up to the Youth category and will be
racing over 30 minutes and on tougher courses.
Kerrigan Robb rode several of the Lincolnshire league events where he too
had some really good results. With still another year in this category we could
see him moving even higher up the result sheet.
Well done to all the Meteors for the 2010/ 2011 cyclo cross season.
